Individual at any level of organization: top management, middle management, supervisors. Individuals can take on formal or informal managerial roles: possible to have managerial responsibilities, yet don"t play the role of a manager. Will have to apply managerial skills sometime in life. Mintzberg"s study of managers found that managers engaged in a variety of unpatterned short-duration activities. Managerial tasks that arise from the managers formal authority base and involve relationships with either other members or external parties: figurehead: typically ceremonial or symbolic in nature. Source of inspiration: leader: manager serves as a motivator, communicator, and a coordinator. Conducting interpersonal appraisals: liaison: developing relationships with members of the organization outside the manager"s area of authority. Must ensure subordinates have required information to perform job: spokesperson: transmit information to individuals outside their area of authority. Managers must process information and act as decision makers: entrepreneur: create and control change within the organization, disturbance handler: dealing with and attempting to resolve conflict.
