Colonists won"t allow women to have any sort of authority or hierarchy. 1818-1822 aboriginal women demonstrate authority by taking their rights. Women were seen as witches for hanging men. Men are leaving the farm and going to town because it"s more exciting . Women thought to only be for reproduction, cooking, etc. But men moved away to town, so women had to move too. Married for security, not love (patriarchal society) Keeps patriarchy in tact by men owning all the land, eventually gives to son. Son needs to pay tribute to father. Women giving birth relied on indigenous women to help. Women are seen as frail and weak. Cannot leave private realm due to danger in the public realm. Women should stay home, dress conservative, don"t need an education.
