Controversial 1993 essay, the five sexes , suggested two-sex system was inadequate to account for biological realities. Wrote to provoke conversation that current distinctions should be replaced by five sexes. Herms: true hermaphrodite with ovary and testis; or combined gonad called an ovo-testis. Merms: pseudo-hermaphrodites having an ovary with male genitalia. Ferms: pseudo-hermaphrodites having a testis with female genitalia.
