Primary groups meaning those who are taking care of the child: we use the reactions of others as a mirror to evaluate and define ourselves. Significant others (primary care takers) vs. the generalized other (expectations of society: george herbert mead, stages of role-taking & self-development: Imitation (preparatory stage): children under age 3 can only mimic others; no o role-taking. This is a combo of imaginatively play in early socialization: play stage: children from ages 3 6 take on the roles of specific people; role- taking of significant others only. Pretend to take the role of specific people: game stage: children ages 7 15 play organized games; take on the role of multiple others. Children understand their own social position and the position of others. Id: inborn drives for self-gratification, basic biological needs food, safety, sexual gratification, etc: ego: the balancing force between the id and the demands, norms or constraints of society that suppress it.
