Sy 101 - d: lecture: wednesday, november 8th: Sex: humans are divided into two distinct sexes in the basis of (chromosomes, sex organs, hormones) male - xy, female - xx. Biological determinism: people"s dispositions, attitudes, behaviours, social roles and other personal qualities are determined by their biology. Essentialism: attributing social constructs to biological or genetic causes. Gender essentialism: purports that male-female differences in sexual scripts, the division of labour (home and workplace), selection of partners, sexual aggression, etc. are natural and universal. Cisgender: people whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth (sex = gender) Ignores historical and cultural variability of gender and sex. Intersex people are born with variations in sex characteristics and do not fit the typical definitions of the male sex or female sex (including chromosomes, gonads, sex hormones or genitals) Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from their assigned sex.
