(if time) The process where by human beings are turned into social beings. Classic sociological position: human beings do not have instincts. Instincts: complex pattern of behavior that is genetically determined. Environment (socialization, cultural context, childhood experiences) behaviour. The more complex the behaviour, the greater the influence of environment. Sociologists: biology gives us potentials, but doesn"t determine behaviour. Identified that murderous brains are different from regular brains. Our self image is based on how we think others see us. We imagine how we look to a significant other. We imagine that person"s judgement of our appearance. Self-feeling or reaction arises in relation to the other"s judgement. Thomas theorem: things perceived to be real are .
