Sociologists call opera, ballet, art, and similar activities high culture. High culture: culture consumes mainly by upper class. Sociologists distinguish high culture from popular culture or mass culture. Popular or mass culture: culture consumed by all classes. All classes consume popular or mass culture, upper classes tend to consume high culture. Religion helps people give meaning to life and come to terms with death. Tools and religion are elements of culture because they help people solve real life problems. Religion and technology are passed from one generation to the next. Culture becomes shares when it is socially transmitted. Society: number of people who interact, usually in a de ned territory and share a culture. Cultural survival kits contained three main tools: abstraction, cooperation, and production. Human culture only exists because we can think abstractly.
