How do sociologists approach the concepts of race and ethnicity? race: physical marker ethnicity, cultural markers that define certain groups as distinct from one another, ethnic group shares language or custom socially constructed categories. People believe and act that there"s a variety of races out there: sociologists are interested in how people socially construct the idea of race. Prejudice: an attitude o judging someone based on their group membership. Normative theories focus on the socialization process: socialization racism can be taught by families, peer groups and mass media. Mass media (cartoon) reinforce stereotypes for specific groups teach children that people who have accents or look different are somehow inferior/more corrupt accents are associated with wrong doing/stupidity. Absence of representation: conflict theories: conflict theory 1: split (duel)-labour market theory. Both capitalist elites and white workers benefit from exploitation of visible minorities: conflict theory 2: colonialism. People from country invade another country take political, economic and cultural control.
