Class 7 death and children: children"s and adoles(cid:272)ent"s (cid:272)on(cid:272)ept and experien(cid:272)e of death. Activity: from hadad (2009, p. 24: think about how your family handled the topic of death when you were a child. Euphemisms are used to explain death to children: should children be kept from funerals or other rites or rituals held at death, where and how are children exposed to death? (they know more than we may think) Ages 2-3: no cognitive understanding -seen as abandonment -sleep and eating patterns may change, regression -even the infant senses the emotionally charged atmosphere in a grieving family -may need to be held more frequently, keep routines the same. Ages 2/3-6: death similar to sleep, responsible for a death (themselves or someone/something else) magical thinking -think the loved one will return. Ages 6-9: death is final and irreversible -at 6-just at the cusp of mastering the 4 essential attributes of death: cause, body stops, irreversible, universal.
