Document Summary

Lesson 3 judaism in conflict and peace. Although it was destroyed nearly two thousand years ago (in the year 70 ce) by the armies of imperial rome, the jewish temple and the platform upon which it stood, known as the. Temple mount, was and remains a thoroughly sacred space for jews and judaism. We shall have more to say about sacred space later. This chapter builds towards not simply a discussion of sacred space, but to an examination of how judaism can contribute to conflict and to peace-making in the use of sacred space. By showing how a religion can encourage both conflict and peace over a sacred space, we can describe one way in which all religions are globally significant. First, we shall introduce the origins and development of judaism and its major features. Our emphasis will be on earlier developments, and i"ll suggest a resource or two if you are interested in later history.
