Document Summary

Elite and concerned with culture and literature by athens. Western world, later closed because it was thought to promote too much paganism and less of christianity. Same religious system as ancient greece with the olympians being the primary gods. Women would sometimes have these dinner parties too, but talk about ideas, particularly love. Progression of concepts of love, leading up to the last speech of socrates. Love is the eldest of the gods, talking about eros. In some stories, eros is the son of aphrodite, some say he just comes into being. Greatest sin is to be dishonored in front of your lover. Difference between lover and beloved: older/teacher is the lover, beloved is the younger one and is a student. Focus on aphrodite and why there are two stories of her: one is heavenly love and the other is common love. Common love: love of the body, sensuality (the way men feel about women or sometimes young men)
