PS381 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Hypnotic Induction, Hypnosis, Agreeableness
Document Summary
Hypnotic virtuosos: have exceedingly interesting abilities, e. g. , hypnotic suggestions for hallucinations, for pain, or for lack of pain (hypnotic analgesia) In brain imaging studies, their brains light up as if the hypnotic suggestion is actually happening. Main determinant of hypnotic response: the person"s hypnotic ability, common misconception of special powers or exceptional charisma of hypnotist, hypnosis treatment tends to move rapidly toward self hypnosis (aka autohypnosis), eliminating reliance on hypnotist. Some issues to consider: issue 1: group versus individual administration issues, group setting: those who were hypnotized complete a questionnaire afterwards to assess how much they responded to each item, which is later used for scoring. Individual setting: the hypnotist observes and scores the person"s response to each item: research investigating the discrepancy between self-report and observer-report finds that self-reports tend to be off only by small amounts (about 1 in 12 items)
