PS375 Lecture 14: Identity in Retired Professional Women
Document Summary
Borrero and kruger: nature and meaning of identity in retired. Due to increasing life expentancy older adults of today will spend nearly 25% of their lives in retirement. Older women have engaged in unique work histories compared to men, characterized often by dicontinuous employment, lower paying jobs, and extensive domestic responsibilities. Women demonstrate less financial preparedness for retirement than men. Lower financial status and high rates of widowhood disadvantage women when it comes to this. Though women are more likely to work for employers offering pension plans they are less likely to qualify for and elect to participate in such plans. However as more women engage in continuous paid employment, its been suggested they may deelop stronger work identities, resulting in less positive attitudes toward retirement than previously found. Social linkages helps women enjoy a more balanced life through support of strong friendships and allow them to make meaningful social contributions.
