Schwartz et al (2016) emerging adulthood: a new developmental period in. Largely optimistic and focued on psychological experiences of individual young person. Other perspectives are more pessimistic/focused on the shortage of opportunities and on potential for getting stuck in transition to adulthood. In middle of 20th century, adult roles were entered into quickly following completion of post-secondary education but these roles were largely stable and permanent. Careers were a means of providing income rather than a way of fulfilling personal ambitions or actualizing latent talents and potentials. Western economic systems have become increasingly technologically based and degrees have been a virtual requirement for most white-collar occupations. Social and sexual revolutions of 60s and 70s empowered women to escape unhappy marriages and encouraged people to date more extensively before settling down. Average age of marriage increased from early 20s to mid to late 20s, and sometimes beyond 30 for having children.
