Characteristics of anxiety (1) result of cognitive appraisal of a stimulus and/or situation: ex. State anxiety: situation-specific, how athelete feels in that specific moment, changes depending on context, playing tennis in your hometown, screw up because she was anxious and felt a lot more pressure. Somatic anxiety: perception of physical anxiety, increased hr, muscle tension, respiration. *diagram (cid:1) (cid:1: global trait anxiety- anxiety across all situations, competitive trait anxiety- anxiety related to competition in general, social physique anxiety- anxiety related to exercise or sport (how we look, body image) We have to reach this optimal level. Performance/ arousal diagram- upside down u: poor at the bottom, awesome at the top, performance is best when arousal is medium. This theory doesn"t talk about worry, or how it affects your performance. Doesn"t explain effect of arousal on performance, doesn"t explain why.
