Risk factors: aspects of settings, communities and persons that are associated with problematic individual outcomes such as personal distress, mental disorders or behavioural problems. Poverty, disruptive family situations, dangerous neighbourhood, drug use, temperament, etc. (class) Physical abuse, family conflict, teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol use, criminal acts, unemployment, illiteracy, etc. (lecture slide) Protective factors: strengths or resources for coping associated with positive individual outcomes. Example: job insecurity: disease of the 21st century, people refer to it as the feeling of anxiety, chronic fear of losing your job. Job insecurity has been a problem for the entirety of the 21st century for us. Peer support: we may not have the same experience but we have the shared experience. Find out you"re not alone and you can get on with the business of living: purpose is that people get it. Skills for safer living: people who have made at least 5+ emergency/hospitalizations, people who have attempted suicide 7+ times.
