Introduction to Schizophrenia

History of Schizophrenia
● Kraepelin
○ Dementia Praecox (loss of mind early onset)
● Bleuler
○ Didn’t believe it needed to be early onset or that it always led to loss of mind
○ Came up with ‘schizophrenia’ (splitting of the mind)
○ People often have delusions - dissociation between thoughts and how they feel
about themselves
Schizophrenia
● Prevalence is less than 1% - about 300 000 Canadians currently diagnosed
○ Cultural differences - less people in eastern cultures are diagnosed
● Age of onset: late teens to mid 30s
○ Gender difference in onset - men early 20s, women later 20s
● Comorbidity
○ Highly comorbid with substance abuse - to try to slow/control thoughts
○ About ⅓ of those diagnosed with schizophrenia
○ Personality disorders
○ Mood and anxiety disorders - depression most common among mood, and social
anxiety most common among anxiety
● Schizophrenia has a very high rate of mortality - life expectancy is 20 years less than
normal
○ Suicide is common
○ Substance abuse - overdose
● Cost to govt and system is higher than other disorders mainly due to hospitalization
rates
Nature of Schizophrenia
● Active phase symptoms
○ Positive symptoms
■ Addition of behaviour that is not in normal pop
○ Disorganized symptoms
■ Absence of something that should be evident in normal pop
○ Negative symptoms
Positive Symptoms
● Delusions
○ False beliefs - misrepresentation of reality, think something is there despite
evidence to the contrary
