Some historical and social background on the transition to university in north america. As steinberg discusses later in the text (chapter 12), attendance at university in north. America has become much more common over the last century. College and university attendance was very rare in the 1930"s and 40"s when my parents were graduating from high school; fewer than 15% of all older adolescents in north. Today, this figure is near 60%, so that the majority of late adolescents are involved in post-secondary schooling of some sort. Much of this expansion took place after the second world war through 1970, and the. Baby boom generation was in fact the first in the united states and canada to continue their education past high school: still, many individuals do not attend post-secondary institutions. Continuing one"s education remains closely linked to family socio-economic status, with higher-status families more likely to see their children attend university or college (steinberg, chapter 12).
