Document Summary
Information processing theory: how we take in, work on, and remember information. 2 major models: 1. store model. Info is stored in 3 parts of a processing system, inborn and universal. As info passes through the stores we operate on it, and transform it using different mental strategies: 2. level processing model. Sensory register: rst information-processing store, receives large amounts of info from senses, holds it for a very short time, only when we pay attention to something is it maintained in the sensory register. Short term memory (aka working memory): second information-processing store, holds limited amount of info for a few seconds, info that is currently being thought about, when stop thinking about it, it disappears. Ways to hold info in stm: 1. rehearsal (2 types) A. maintenance rehearsal: repeat info, the longer it stays in stm the greater the chance it will be transferred to ltm. Chunking or grouping material into meaningful units, can hold 5-9 bits.
