King psamtik had a hypothesis that egyptian is the most ancient and that two infants would spontaneously speak the language. Raises kids in remote area and were never to hear anyone speak. He wanted to know what these kids would speak. Kid starts saying a word from different language. This was supposedly the first developmental experiment in recorded history. Scientific method: formulating theories developing hypotheses testing them. Ways to collect data includes observation, controlled situations, written tests, or interviews. 3 most common used research methods: naturalistic observations correlations experiments. Naturalistic observation: observing in the natural environment (school, playground). Observation is converted into records but, must be done with out interference. This is the most commonly used research method. Hawthorne effect: is what happens to peoples behavior when they know they are being recorded/watched. Participant observation: is when the observer becomes part of the group that is being observed. Correlations: has to do with looking for relationships b/w variables.
