Chapter 2: the self in a social world. Lawson (2010) found 40% of students predicted that other students would remember sweatshirt logo, however only 10% of students recalled the logo. When we feel self-conscious we can worry about being evaluated negatively. Savitsky and gilovich (2003) found that knowing about the illusion can reduce the effects of being self-conscious and improve public speaking skills. At the centre of our worlds: our sense of self: self-schema, beliefs about self that organize and guide the processing of self-relevant information. Social comparisons: we compare ourselves to others and are conscious of those differences, lockwood and kunda (1997) found that social comparisons can have either positive or negative effects on the self. Independent self: self-concept as stable, self-esteem as personal, collectivism (ie. 3rd world countries) Interdependent self: self-concept as malleable, self-esteem as rational. Experiment: americans pick the one that is different, 2/3 of asians pick the one that is different, cultural preferences.
