Close Relationships - Attraction, Liking, Loving
Propinquity: the person next door
● Propinquity or Proximity
○ Geographical nearness
○ Look at complex of married students apartments (study) → married couples
randomly assigned to apartment at beginning of year (didn’t know neighbours),
surveyed later in year about who close friends were within building complex, 65%
named people who lived in the same building as them, and as you moved further
apart within buildings, the likelihood of being close friends decreases… also
functional distance eg people close to stairwells more likely to be friends with
people on other floors
● Why?
○ More opportunity for interaction
○ Mere exposure effect
■ More exposure = more liking → unless the person is generally dislikable
○ Familiarity breeds liking
○ Mere exposure in the classroom → female sent into classroom pretending to take
notes (attended 1-15 times), students reported the women more likeable if they
were in the class more times throughout the semester (not interacting)
○ Reversed-image photos → bring friend to study, present photo either normally or
reversed, presented to friend and participant, we are used to seeing ourselves in
a mirror… friends prefer true print, participant prefers reversed print
● A new twist: the internet
○ Message boards, discussion forums → can talk more while not being
geographically close
○ Are e-relationships of the same quality? Study → found people reported liking
initial interaction more if on internet than face to face
