Chapter 3: the nervous system: why are drugs classified as psychoactive, because they alter the ongoing functions in the brain. L01-homeostasis: what is homeostasis, staying the same , maintenance of an environment of body functions within a certain range (eg. temperature, blood pressure etc. , describes the fact that many biological factors are maintained at or near certain levels. Ex: most biochemical reactions are temperature dependent and optimally occur near 37 degrees celsius. L02-components of the nervous system: what two main things compose the nervous system, nerve cells and chemical signals, these help with communication and control systems within the nervous system. Glial cells + nerve cells: what two types of cells is the nervous system composed of, glial cells. 10 to 50 times as many glia as neurons (they outnumber them 10 to 1) They have a minimal role in the effects of psychoactive drugs.
