Document Summary

Developmental psychology: the study of changes in behavior and mental processes over time and the factors that influence the course of those constancies and changes. Nature vs. nurture: how much of our growth, personality, and development is attributed to our genetic inheritance or the environment we grow up in is a key debate in human development. Quantitative (continuous and gradual change) vs. qualitative stages (set stages) Critical periods: early deprivation can result in severe psychological disabilities, more positive and stimulating settings can help them recover partially. Cohort-sequential design: designed to look at both how individuals from different age groups compare to one another and also follow them over time: overall, shorter time span. May do different cohorts for varying amounts of time: pros and cons of both the longitudinal and cross-sectional, measure any differences between the groups that persisted over time, but in different cohort groups. Genes: basic building blocks of our biological inheritance.
