PS102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Self-Determination, Lateral Hypothalamus, Pansexuality
Document Summary
An internal state or condition that directs behaviour. People are motivated by their biological (innate) instincts. Inborn behavioural tendencies, activated by stimuli in our environments. Belief that a physiological need creates an aroused state that drives (motivates) us to reduce that need. We are motivated to a pursue an optimum level of stimulation (srousal) States that performance on task is best when arousal level is optimal for that speci c task. Motivated by internal factors and engaging in behaviour simply for the satisfaction that is part of doing it. Motivated by external factors that are not related to the task (incentives) Cues that are viewed as rewarding as a result of learning about their association with other events. Brain regions associated with dopamine release are activated during a pleasurable experience and direct future behaviour. - empty stomach and low blood glucose may stimulate the lateral hypothalamus to motivate us to eat.
