Introspection: give an idea then say what you see, hear, feel, smell, touch to describe it. Too subjective varies from person to same person. Reason why their experience is the way it is. Schools of thought battle continues through 1900s: what is the root cause of behavior: psychoanalytic theory: unconscious determinants ( below the surface of awareness) of behavior. What causes behavior is something we are unaware of on a daily basis. We are unaware of why we do what we do. Cannot be verified, how do we really know: behaviourism. Study of observable behavior definition of behaviorism: watson, skinner, behavioursism vs. unobservable processes like unconsciousness, behavior = observable process, any overt response or activity, has to be testable stimulus-response (what causes- behavior) Methodology = animal model: focus moved to behavior rather than consciousness study animal behavior b/c it"s easier to observe we can control them, animals do have a conscious though, so testing may not be valid.
