Free associations and the analyst: analyst tracks associations, identi es apparent underlying source. Catharsis: patient encouraged to explore intense and string feelings, feelings that they have repressed for fear of punishment/ retaliation, release called catharsis, resistance. #2: therapist expects client to try and maintain status quo.
