PS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Observer-Expectancy Effect, Blind Experiment, Psychophysics
Document Summary
Goals of psych description (what), explanation, prediction, control. Naturalistic (don"t interfere, just watching), laboratory (need to control environment to avoid certain things by putting the situation in a lab; still not interfering) Case study the case of h. m: removed hippocampus to stop epilepsy but in the process lost his memory. Could still learn new motor skills. need people with a specific type of condition for case study. Naturalistic observation seeing behaviour in natural setting, spontaneously produced ethical issues prevent other methods. Naturalistic observations have to wait for an event to happen observer bias ( Laboratory observation loss of spontaneity (same as above) No cause and effect (don"t know for sure what really caused the event, can only guess) Derive hypothesis: a prediction, a cause-effect relationship. September 15th: manipulation (researcher chooses the variable, makes it a controlled environment, ex. Independent: the one you manipulate (ex one group in noisy room, one in quiet room = study condition)
