Looks at distinguishing colonial rule direct vs indirect. Even though britain preferred indirect rule, and france tended towards direct, the situation was more complex. If the area was colonized was seen as an attractive place for a settler population had to do if whether or not it was colonized. Areas in india had large british settler populations, and this influenced how things were managed on the ground. In kenya, there were large numbers of british people who moved there, thinking they would be staying there long term. They felt they would have colonies much like we had in canada, and this led to a different type of management. In tanzania, it wasn"t a good place for british to farm, due to pests, that attacked and killed the type of cattle british liked to raise. This had implications for africans living there at the time.
