Those with authority have the right to exercise power. Involves granting of rights and responsibilities to particular individuals and groups so they can make the community function. Authority is vested in the uniform - the institution. A person receives power and legitimacy because of the institution that he or she represents. That right to exercise power is accepted by the population. Important to remember that legitimacy is often baked by the threat of a negative follow up- coercion. When legal-rational authority is at play: legitimacy is based on whether a person upholds the rules and procedures of the institutions. Power was vested in a particular person due to heredity or custom. Impersonal, derived from a position in an institution. Based on rule of law; or through a fair and socially acceptable process. Authority is limited since of cials are expected to follow laws and procedures.
