Music lights up parts of the brain responsible for emotion and long term processing. Music may ignite longer lasting memories because of the way it triggers so many different parts of the brain. Many of these veterans can sing wartime songs and remember every word. People can forget family members and yet remember a song they learned when they were 5. When the sun goes down, people with dementia get agitated, called sun down. Program developed for this: music and friends; large collaborative singalong program. Take them to different room out of unit and lead art therapy interventions. 1 in 10 soldiers after returning from afganistan. May be perceived as egocentric to family and friends. May go their whole lives without talking about affects of war however it is unleashed near end of their lives. Music impacts specific areas of brain that help with emotional regulation. Couldn"t remember where she put things or how she got placed.
