Both blur and oasis began as indie bands. The britpop bands of the 90"s celebrated their englishness in a much more transparent way than ever before. Blur became disheartened when on their american tour no-one wanted to hear their smart pop-rock music but instead grunge. They released the unabashedly british song modern life is rubbish which was almost called england versus america. Even more important than being anti-american was sounding english. Britpop readopted their nation"s guitar based rock from days gone by. Britpop bands borrowed specifically from other classic british bands. Authenticity in the britpop age was: having roots in the indie scene and not turning into a corporate rock star.
