The difference between r&b and soul is that r&b is an umbrella term coined in the. 1940"s for a wide selection of black music some of which was indistinguishable from first generation rock n roll and soul was an umbrella term to capture the various sub- genres of r&b in the 1960"s. The term soul comes out of jazz where is meant music with authenticity and sincerity. Soul is a form of black music beginning in the 1950"s and 60"s that merged gospel style singing with secular lyrics and r&b rhythms. The expressive gospel-style singing gives it a spontaneity, depth and personal attachment to the singer. Funk was musically heavier with more emphasis on the bass and drums, particularly the use of polyrhythmic (multiple rhythms played simultaneously) drumming. The most influential funk artist of the 1960"s was james brown brown"s band was legendary for its craftsmanship.
