KP290 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Passive Transport, Autocrine Signalling, Active Transport

7 views2 pages

Document Summary

Autocrine signals: act on the same cell that secreted them. Paracrine signals: are secreted by one cell and diffuse to adjacent cells. If neurotransmitters are close to the target cell they will bind to receptors and cause a response. Most signal pathways consists of the 5 steps shown. Use the shapes and colours of the steps shown here to identify the pattern in later illustrations. Allow exchange of material: icf/ecf (cellular uid) Permeable = allow molecules to pass through. Allow the transport of some substances, but not others. Easily transported across membrane (ex: o2, co2, fatty acids) Normally not transported (ex: glucose, proteins, na+) Know whether inside of the cell or outside of the cell has a higher concentration. Potassium has more concentration inside the cell then outside the cell. Sodium has more concentration outside the cell then inside the cell. Calcium has more outside the cell then inside the cell.
