Document Summary

Kp290 lecture 12 selecting the sample (oct. 5, 2016) How many participants do you need based on the statistics you want: the more variables, the more participants you"ll need. All possible individuals making up a group of interest in a study: very few situations when you can get information from all the relevant individuals. A small proportion of the population is selected for inclusion in a study. Process of choosing members of a population to be included in the sample. You need to be able to apply findings from the sample to the larger population. Two major types of sampling: probability sampling. Likelihood of any one member of the population being selected is known. Ex: 4000 students at uoft, sample 100, probability is: nonprobability sampling. Likelihood of selecting any one member of a population is not known. Simple random sampling: each individual in a population has an equal and independent chance of being selected.
