KP221 – L11
Muscle belly is on the lateral part of the leg - where it is bulky
Clincial: shin splints - can progress to anterior tibialis anterior syndrome - the muscle, blood
supply, and nerve supply the blood supply will decrease
Patterns:if it has the name tibialis and it inverts the foot
The insertion point determines which arch is supported
Patterns: all muscles are supplied by the deep fibular nerve
Fibularis Tertius - superior to the ankle
Origin: inferior third of anterior surface of fibula and interosseous membrane
Insertion: dorsum of base of 5th metatarsal
Action: dorsiflexion ankle, aids in foot eversion
Pattern: if it has the name fibularis then it performs foot eversion
Extensor Hallucis Longus
Origin: middle part of anterior surface of fibula and interosseous membrane
Insertion: dorsal aspect of base of distal phalanx of hallux
Action: extends great toe, dorsiflexion on ankle
Pattern: Blood Supply
All of the muscles in this compartment are supplied by the anterior tibial artery
LATERAL COMPARTMENT
Fibularis muscles: weak plantar flexors and both evert the foot
Fibularis Longus
Origin: head and superior ⅔ of lateral surface of fibula
Insertion: base of 1st metatarsals and medial cuneiforms
Fibularis Brevis
Origin: middle part of lateral surface of fibula
Insertion: dorsal surface of tuberosity of base of 5th metatarsal
Patterns:
Action and nerve supply are the same:
Nerve supply - superficial fibular nerve
Action - evert foot, weak plantar flexor
Exception: only fibularis longus supports the transverse arch of the foot
Blood supply:
Fibularis brevis: fibular artery
Fibularis longus: fibular artery and anterior tibial artery
