The government did not have a legitimate role to play in the promotion of sport. The national physical fitness act was repealed in 1954. Nuclear arms made the idea of national preparedness by means of a physical fitness program obsolete. Postwar technologies altered the relationship between government and sport. By 1961, 83% of households had television sets. Canadian network television coverage was available to 94% of the population. Growth of tv coincided with a decline in hockey prowess.
