GS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Neoconservatism, Individualism, Anthropocene
Document Summary
Gs101 lecture 20: neoconservatism proposes to resolve these problems and restore social solidarity through 2 main concepts, militarization against an external enemy, the end of the cold war raised the question of the enemy. Radical islam and china emerged as two external candidates, and dissident internal movements had to be targeted internally by stronger surveillance and policing. Globalization is a set of designs to manage the world. Cosmopolitanism is a set of projects towards planetary conviviality. All human beings, regardless of their political affiliation, do (or at least can) belong to a single community, and that this community should be cultivated. Different versions of cosmopolitanism envision this community in different ways, some focussing on political institutions, others on moral norms or relationships, and still others focusing on shared markets or forms of cultural expression. The philosophical interest in cosmopolitanism lies in its challenge to commonly recognized attachments to fellow-citizens, the local state, parochially shared cultures, and the like.
