GS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Chopsticks, Media Consumption
Document Summary
A group of people who regard themselves as one people by virtue or culture. They share a sense of belonging through shared cultural root such as: Institutionalized and patterned set of beliefs, values, behaviours and practices (broadly shared over a significant amount of time). Values (how to lead a good life) Practices (covering/uncovering head as sign of respect) Steger: the symbolic construction, articulation and dissemination of meaning. The way we think, speak, behave and spend our time. High culture: long lasting, most meaningful elements. Our interactions between each other define us as a species. We partake in communal events + practices and shared ideas. Need to take both biology and culture into account. Neither one standing alone is accountable for who we are. The meaning we attach to life varies from culture to culture. Functions as a tendency, but does not predetermine outcomes. Swings in a pendulum (war + peace, greed + altruism, etc. )
