Document Summary

Most natural streams experience some form of bank overflow on the average every second year. This makes a large percentage of the population at risk of the flood hazard. Calgary - calgary experienced a major flood disaster in 2013. This event achieved the rank of the most expensive disaster in canadian history. The city is still recovering from the impacts which will likely take years and yet is still rebuilding in the floodplain of the bow river. Description - river or fluvial geomorphology is an important field of study in geography and is linked to other fields such as hydrology, geophysical engineering and watershed planning. Fluvial studies examine the movement of water and sediment through the river system or watershed and the processes of erosion, transport and deposition of material. Runoff - water that flows over the land surface; includes overland flow on slopes and channelized stream flow.
