The process by which the plot conveys or withholds information about the story. Film style is the vehicle for narration. 1) unrestricted (omniscient): the audience knows more than the characters: ex: sherlock jr"s mystery of the pocket watch using parallel editing, parallel editing, non-diegetic voice-over are stylistic elements used in unrestricted knowledge. 2) restricted: the audience knowledge is equal to the character"s knowledge: e. g. , harry potter and the sorcerer"s stone or rear window , eyeline match, cinematography can be used to withhold knowledge. Restricted can create a surprise, whereas unrestricted can produce suspense. How deeply do we know the characters. 2) subjective: character"s internal experience: perceptual subjectivity (e. g. , pov) is access to what they see and hear, mental subjectivity is access to character"s memories (flashback), dreams, fantasies (inner mind) dissolve editing transition. Tends to be objective and unrestricted, but not always.
