This lesson considers the various types of energy sources available and their relative use. Different energy paths are considered and assessed for their sustainability. Energy efficiency is discussed and the importance of shifting our attitudes towards use and conservation. The video presents a number of renewable energy alternatives such as solar, wind, and waste that provide possibilities to achieve sustainable energy use. Background notes - (from mather and chapman, 1995): Energy is one of the most important resources to humans, and the search to improve sources of energy has persistently been sought to improve the quality of life. Energy resources can be classified as either renewable or non-renewable (see figure 12. 1). Non- renewable includes nuclear and chemical, while renewable energy sources include solar, 99 per cent of the energy entering the global ecosystem is derived from the sun. The rest comes from the earth either as heat from geothermal activity or gravitational energy, for example, from falling water.
