Document Summary

Ecosystem services: the wlu campus as pollinator habitat. Lab 2 instructions: es101 fall 2017, dr. r. mcleman. After all, we re the only species that has walked on the moon, that can build supercomputers, or that is able to develop vaccines and medicines to protect ourselves against illness and infection. But in spite of our ever-growing technological prowess, human life is not possible without a lot of help from the ecosystems around us. Some of these ecosystem services are obvious basic needs, like fresh water to drink and clean air to breathe. We can t make these things using human technology ecosystems must provide these to us. Some ecosystem services are less obvious, like the processes of weathering and decomposition that are continuously operating to generate the fertile soils we need to grow our foods. And speaking of foods, much of what we eat and drink (and wear) is made possible only because of the beneficial actions of animal pollinators.
