EN119 Lecture 2: Week 2
Document Summary
In death by landscape, atwood has created a story about setting, throughout the story, she investigates how the searing affects the action and the characters. Atwood"s narrative consciously draws our attention to the way in which authors create a setting and our ability to read setting as both real and constructed. 2 distinct settings can be noted: lois"s condo on the waterfront and camp manitou. But there is a 3rd setting: the paintings of northern ontario landscapes. The second section of the story starts with the following passage: when she was thirteen, lois went on a canoe trip. This was to be a long one, into the trackless wilderness, as cappie put it. It was lois"s rst canoe trip, and her last. (9) All over ontario, children are doing the same things, and in the process turning the outdoors, the former wilderness, into something tame and controlled.
