■ Racial bias is present at every level of the criminal justice system
■ 1 in 17 white males can expect to go to prison, but 1 in 3 black males can

fountains, seats on buses
‘Black Lives Matter’? (2013-)
● USA and Canada: no official statistics kept on deaths in police custody
● Research by activists, academics, and journalists
● 2000 to mid 2016
○ 12 042 killed in interactions with US police
○ 2600 blacks and 4600 marked as ‘race unspecified’
● Jan 2015-July 2016: numbers killed by police
○ 1499 civilians killed by US police (WP database)
○ 1702 deaths (442 blacks) (the counted the guardians database)
● USA: 2015 Statistics
○ Black people are most likely to be killed by police
○ 3x more likely to be killed by police than white people
○ 33% of black victims were unarmed, compared to 18% of white victims
