2009 gss: about 25% of canadians victimized in previous year, overall, 7. 4 million incidents reported, breakdown: 31 percent violent, 36% household, 34% theft of personal property, many victimizations not reported (9,792,000 incidents!) Stress and anxiety: post traumatic stress disorder, suicide, mental health problems, homelessness. Media focuses on sensational crime: most murders are committed by someone known to the victim, on television, the murders most likely to be reported are random acts. Cycle of violence: the phenomenon of child victims of abuse becoming adult criminals due to their early abusive experience. Abuse in childhood is related to drug problems and crime in adulthood. Males are more likely to use violence if: they were abused and/or, they witnessed spousal abuse. Females also show behavioural and adjustment problems if they were exposed to family violence. Canadian urban victimization survey, 1982: there is significant and reported crime. International crime victims survey: compare what happens in different countries.
