Code is the foundation for judeo-christian moral teachings and also a basis for our present day legal system. Followed the fall of rome in which many early codes were lost. Trial by ordeal or combat (placing hand in boiling eater, glowing iron, etc. ) Also surviving is the roman law contained in the twelve tables (451 bce) Wergild under medieval law, the money paid by the offender to compensate the victim and the state for a criminal offence. Oath-helper(s) during middle ages, groups of 12-25 people who would support the accused"s innocence.
