Secure and protect scene: initiate preliminary survey / determine scene boundaries walk-through; Cautious search : evaluate possibilities for physical evidence, prepare narrative description, depict scene photographically, prepare diagram/sketch of scene, conduct detailed search, record and collect physical evidence, conduct final survey, release crime scene. In case you forget: so someone else can understand the scene through your notes. The correction is to be signed and dated. Contemporaneous notes: only describe what you see the notes need to describe the observations in lay terms, where?, when?, what, but , do not interpret, make assumptions, step outside of expertise. Legal documents: contemporaneous notes are legal documents, for your reference when you get subpoenaed to court, can also be subpoenaed by any party (prosecution or defence)
