Researching Crime
find more resources at oneclass.com
find more resources at oneclass.com
- Two major aspects of design:
o 1) Specify what you want to find out
o 2) Determine best way to do it
- Example: corruption in government
Main Purposes of Research
- 1. Exploration: exploring topic, relatively new or old topic which has
changed, want to see what the change is, gets done a lot in market
research
- 2. Description: describe characteristics of crime,
- 3. Explanation: trying to answer question of why? Explaining crime
Modes of Observation
A. Experiments (Positivistic approach)
- Suited for: hypothesis and casual testing
- 1) Independent & Dependent variables (cause & effect)
- 2) Pre-testing & Post-testing
- 3) Experimental & Control Groups
- Advantages: isolate variable, often replicate experiments over time
- Disadvantages: often done in laboratory setting, not duplicating real
world
B. Quantitative Analysis (Surveys)
- Empirical
- Surveys: mail, in person, by phone, electronically
- Statistical analysis (proportions, regression, rates
- Reliability
- Strengths: very useful in large populations
- Weaknesses: people who answer may be answering the best, not what it
is
C. Qualitative Analysis (Observation)
- Participant (non-participant) observation
- In-depth interviews (open-ended questions)
- Case studies
- Ethnography Whyte’s Street Corner Society, 1955
- Field research (labour)
- Validity (measure)
- Strengths: observe people who are going about with natural ways of
doing things, people who are unable to fill out surveys, catch rich detail
- Weaknesses: sample sizes are too small, cannot generalize for large
populations, dangerous for researchers
