BU354 Lecture Notes - Lecture 27: Union Representative
Document Summary
The bargaining stage of negotiations is completed when the agreement has been approved. Often final approval from the employer rests with top management. The union must also approve the proposed agreement: the union bargaining team submits the proposal to the membership for ratification. If the majority votes for the proposal, it replaces the collective agreement if the members reject it, union and management bargainers reopen negotiations. Conciliation: use of a government-appointed third party to explore solutions to a labor- management dispute. In most provinces, no strike action is permitted before a conciliation effort has been made and failed. Mediation: use of a neutral third party to help settle a labor-management dispute: often meet separately with each bargaining team, requires a high degree of sensitivity, patience, and expertise in the psychology of negotiation. Alleged violations of the agreement typically go through the grievance procedure.
